Troubleshooting: Edge/CPE/Switch Failure (Common Causes)

Topics Covered: Duplex Mismatch, Connectivity Failure, Firmware Problems, and Incorrect or Corrupt Configuration

Duplex Mismatch

  • Check the WAN port information on LAN ports for all major network devices including modem/gateways, edge devices, firewalls, and switches that connect to the network edge.
  • Both ports must be set for either half or full duplex. If one port is full duplex and the other side is half duplex, the mismatch will degrade performance.

Connectivity Failure

  • Verify the WAN ports are passing traffic properly.
  • Make sure the proper ports are tagged for VLANs.

Firmware Problems

  • Check with the device vendor to ensure you are using the most stable firmware version.

Incorrect or Corrupt Configuration

  • Verify the configurations for VLANs, registration, routing, port blocks/forwards, etc. are all setup properly.
  • If a device appears to have a corrupt configuration, restore it to a backup.
