ISP Failure or Degradation
Common Causes
- Modem/Gateway Failure - If the ISP’s gateway equipment has any problems, the customer’s VoIP service will be degraded.
- Duplex Mismatch
- Saturated Transport - This is caused when the bandwidth is not sufficient for the traffic load.
Troubleshooting Steps/Solutions
- Modem/Gateway Failure - If the ISP’s gateway equipment has any problems, the customer’s VoIP service will be degraded.
Contact the ISP
- Switch to an alternate transport if available.
- Duplex Mismatch
- Check the WAN port information on LAN ports for all major network devices including modem/gateways, edge devices, firewalls, and switches that connect to the network edge.
- Both ports must be set for either half or full duplex. If one port is full duplex and the other side is half duplex, the mismatch will degrade performance.
- Saturated Transport
- Optimize QoS and traffic shaping.
- Calculate bandwidth requirements and increase capacity as needed.
