Troubleshooting: Network Failure

Topics Covered: ISP Failure or Degradation and Edge Device - Common Causes and Troubleshooting Steps/Solutions

ISP Failure or Degradation

Common Causes

  • Modem/Gateway Failure - If the ISP’s gateway equipment has any problems, the customer’s VoIP service will be degraded.
  • Duplex Mismatch
  • Saturated Transport - This is caused when the bandwidth is not sufficient for the traffic load.

Troubleshooting Steps/Solutions

  • Modem/Gateway Failure - If the ISP’s gateway equipment has any problems, the customer’s VoIP service will be degraded.

Contact the ISP

  • Switch to an alternate transport if available.
  • Duplex Mismatch
  • Check the WAN port information on LAN ports for all major network devices including modem/gateways, edge devices, firewalls, and switches that connect to the network edge.
  • Both ports must be set for either half or full duplex. If one port is full duplex and the other side is half duplex, the mismatch will degrade performance.
  • Saturated Transport
  • Optimize QoS and traffic shaping.
  • Calculate bandwidth requirements and increase capacity as needed.
